HOME Summer Program for Aspiring Physicians

For aspiring students seeking a career in the medical field, the Health Opportunities and Medical Exposure (HOME) Program is a great way to get a headstart. Applications for students to join the HOME Summer Program is open, and the deadline to apply is April 15th, 2024.

For HOME Guam, the vision is to cultivate more “homegrown” physicians by “guiding and supporting Guamanian students who are interested in becoming a physician and passionate about serving our island community.” Through the HOME Program, pre-medical students get the opportunity to connect with local physicians for mentorship and gain exposure to medical practices, providing both early and vital steps for those seeking pathways to a career in medicine.

Program Details:

Eligibility

  • Age 16 or older
  • Attend or be a graduate of an accredited high school or university
  • Maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA (3.0 if a university student)
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in becoming a physician

HOME Scholars Will:

  • Be paired with 1 or more HOME physician mentors and spend a summer shadowing in a clinic and/or hospital setting
  • Become certified in HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)
  • Become certified in BLS (Basic Life Support) – First Aid & CPR w/ AED
  • Deliver a final presentation at the end of the program

Students Must Be Available For:

  • Shadowing for approximately 4 weeks during June and/or July (individual schedules will vary and be designed according to each physician mentor’s availability)
  • Program Orientation: mid-May (tentatively May 19th)
  • Final Presentations: end of July (date TBD)
  • Appreciation Banquet: early August (date TBD)
