Students who are interested in a career in STEMs, especially in the realm of biomedical and cancer research, are encouraged to apply for the Cancer Research Education, Advancement, and Training (CREATE) Program. Hosted through the University of Hawai’i and in partnership with the University of Guam, this comprehensive research program seeks to “enhance the training of a workforce to meet biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs to lower cancer incidence and mortality in the Pacific.”
BENEFITS

- Paid internship experience
- Practical training in lab safety, research, and/or human research protection
- Experience in writing seminars as well as manuscript preparation
- Housing, transportation, and travel compensation
- Faculty Mentorship experience
Application to the internship is open to students who are:
- Currently enrolled, at the time of application, as a sophomore or junior in an accredited college or university
- Students enrolled at UH Hilo and the University of Guam may apply for travel funds
- Academically outstanding (at least a 3.5 GPA)
- Stated interest in cancer research
- Must be Hawaiʻi or Guam residents
- Able to commit to a full-time summer research experience (8 weeks at 40 hours per week)
Priority will be given to eligible applicants who:
- Express a cancer-related research interest that matches an available mentor’s focus in population or laboratory-based research
- Relevant research experience and skills
- Successful completion of college-level courses or training in the areas of biological, chemical, molecular, genetic, public health, nutritional, behavioral, clinical, computational, mathematical, or statistical sciences
- Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that are considered under-represented in the biomedical sciences
- First generation college or low socioeconomic status of the family
- UH students who are interested to continue the traineeship during the school year
