Overview
The University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders Program (Michigan FPHLP) is a 10-week residential program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health (Michigan Public Health) designed to encourage underrepresented college students to consider careers in public health. Participants receive leadership training, orientation to the public health disciplines, and real-world work experience. Students are not required to have previous experience in public health. The program is meant to foster knowledge of, excitement about, and commitment to health equity. The program includes public health and career mentorship, hands-on and practical field experience, seminars, lectures and workshops with public health leaders.
The Program Includes:
- One-week CDC Showcase Event
- Stipend
- On-campus housing, if travel permitted
- Round trip transportation from your home to Ann Arbor, MI, if travel permitted
- University of Michigan Summer Meal Plan, if staying on campus
- Networking opportunities with diverse public health practitioners and faculty
- Engaged mentorship to encourage personal and professional development
- Hands-on learning in community-based organizations, governmental health organizations, health systems, or research
- Career exploration of the public health disciplines
Eligibility Information
- Students who have completed at least two years (or equivalent) of undergraduate study from an accredited college or university in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory
- Note: Students who have an associate’s degree and have not been accepted into a 4 year institution are eligible within 12 months of receiving the associate’s degree.
- Recent college graduates (Fall/Winter 2024 or Spring 2025) who have not been accepted into a graduate program (including medical school)
- Recent college graduates (Fall/Winter 2024 or Spring 2025) who are not enrolled in a combined program that guarantees graduate school admission (e.g. 4 + 1 programs) also qualify
- U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Resident (DACA recipients eligible)
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Middle Eastern, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, persons with disabilities, individuals from rural communities and economically disadvantaged individuals are strongly encouraged to apply
- Students from all majors are eligible to apply
- Minimum 2.7 GPA (good academic standing) is required
