Please provide a brief description of what you do in your line of work

I am a campus navigator for UOG Tritons. I assist students at the University of Guam by creating and delivering student success resources based off the needs of the students.

How did you get into this job or career?

I’ve always cherished working in higher education. My first job at the university gave me the chance to work with at-risk communities on Guam, which was incredibly rewarding. When the opportunity arose to support students within our university, I knew I had to seize it. Not only did it align perfectly with my degrees, but it also allowed me to make a meaningful impact at such a crucial time in young adults’ lives. This is a pivotal moment for them to shape their futures, and I’m excited to be part of that journey.

What do you like the most about your current work?

The best part of my job is knowing that I can play a key role in student success. I love connecting students to campus resources, student organizations, academic counselors, and financial support etc. It’s incredibly fulfilling to raise awareness of all we offer to help them succeed.

What is one major challenge working in this job?

One challenge I face is encouraging students to take full advantage of the wide range of resources available to them. While we do our best to raise awareness, ultimately, students need to take the initiative. However, we’re always here to be a helpful hand, ready to support them every step of the way.

Knowing what you know now, if you could give career advice to your younger self, what would you say?

If I could give my past self one piece of career advice, it would be to never limit yourself to the opportunities in front of you. Keep learning, expanding, and growing. Each experience will provide you with the skills you need to be successful.

What would you say are the skills (soft or technical) necessary to succeed and thrive in the industry/career you are in?

To be successful in the workplace, students need to develop a range of essential skills. Key soft skills include communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and adaptability. Additionally, important technical skills include data analysis, project management, and knowledge of computer systems and networks. With these skills, students can be flexible in various job settings and possess the ability to learn, refine, and grow within their careers. Embrace these skills, and you’ll be well-equipped to thrive in any professional environment.

As a Triton alum, what is one exciting career pathway that opened up as a result of your educational journey, knowledge, and/or connections in UOG?

As a Triton Alum, one of the most exciting career paths that opened up for me was working under Extension and Outreach. Although I initially aspired to be a school counselor, this role allowed me to engage with schools and communities on Guam, identifying and providing essential resources to those in need. By focusing on at-risk communities, from school-age children to senior citizens, I gained invaluable insights into the gaps within our community. This experience not only broadened my perspective but also empowered me to make a meaningful difference.
